Warning signs that it’s time to move house

more

Moving house can be a major upheaval, but there are times in our lives when we begin to realise it’s right to move on. Even though you may have been in love with your house when you first moved in, and felt satisfied that it provided the perfect home for you and your family, it’s inevitable that times and situations change.

If you’re reaching the stage of falling out of love with your current home, but are still weighing up the pros and cons of actually moving, there are a few common warning signs to look out for that could indicate that it’s time to move.

Reason #1: Family members have outgrown the size of your home

One of the most common signs that can tell you that it’s time to move to a new house is when you realize the fact that your present home has got too small for your needs. This case is mostly common among the starter homes. Do you remember your house or apartment to be this small at the beginning? If you notice the constant appearance of storage boxes here and there, if you find yourself waiting in front of the bathroom more often than you should or if your family are expanding fast, it’s perhaps high time to move somewhere bigger.

Reason #2: Your home is too big for your needs

None of the extremes are good for you. Just as you wouldn’t want a fairly small house, a large home can also be a reason for moving. Do you hear the resonating sound of the echo of your own voice? If all your kids have grown up and left the nest, there may be too much extra space. If there are too many unoccupied rooms which do nothing but bring back lost memories, you should ditch them as soon as you can.

It's hard to realise that it's time to move house, but there are common reasons that help indicate that now is the time to move on.

Reason #3: The maintenance costs of your home have become too high

Whenever you’re caught between moving and not moving out, the only way in which you can resolve the issue is to check the present maintenance costs of your home. If you reside in a home that is pretty old, you might have reached a point when the repair costs are soaring out of control. If you see the repair costs eating your hard-earned cash, maybe it’s time to move to a smaller house.

Reason #4: Your home isn’t satisfying you anymore

If you just don’t feel satisfied or happy living in your current home anymore, then why stay? Find somewhere that does make you feel happy and gives you a new lease of life.

Once you’ve made the decision to move, it’s time to put your house on the market and start looking around at new properties. The house hunting stage can be a lot of fun, yet the hard slog of moving can be daunting. Don’t feel you’ve got to cope with it all on your own though, as movers are specialised in helping you move smoothly. As well as moving your furniture on the day you leave your old home, they’ll also help you pack up your belongings too, saving you time and stress during the busy moving period.

The Fresh Design Guide to Moving House

Moving house. It’s said to be one of the most stressful things we can do, but most of us will do it on average seven times over a lifetime, mostly before we reach 40. It then takes up to six months to settle in a new house before it starts to properly feel like home. While moving house is never going to be a completely smooth process, we’ve put our favourite hints and tips into a guide to help you avoid some of the more common pitfalls.

  • You can’t start too soon! Your moving date may feel like a comfortably long way off, but the time will go in a flash. If you’re anything like the rest of us, you probably own a lot more stuff than you think you do! Start early on by packing up non-essentials (such as winter clothes if you’re moving in the summer). The more you can do early on, the less you’ll have to do at the last minute. Alternatively, many removals companies offer a packing service if you really can’t face it.
  • Depending on how much you have to move, there are various options for removal companies. You can book a large company with lorries, or just a ‘man and van’. Try not to be tempted to reply on family and friends, though – you won’t be insured if anything gets broken, friendships will get frayed and people may back out at the last minute, leaving you stranded.
  • Get organised and label each box as it’s finished. A colour code works better than written labels, as it’s much easier to spot quickly – for example, boxes marked with a green sticker go in the kitchen, blue in the sitting room.
  • Plan where furniture will go in the new home before you move. If your old sofa won’t fit through the new living room door, do you have a plan? You may have to take the door off its hinges or even take a window out. If the sofa is on its way to needing replacing, is it really worth paying for it to be moved?
  • Create ‘secure’ and ‘essential’ boxes, and keep them with you in your own car. In the ‘essentials’ box you might put the kettle, teabags, UHT milk, remote controls, phone handsets and everything else you’re going to need immediately. In the ‘secure’ box, pack important paperwork such as passports, and valuables such as jewellery.
  • When you walk in the door of the new house, the first thing to get straight is the bedroom. Moving is a tiring business, and you don’t want to be trying to assemble the bed or looking for the sheets at midnight. The bathroom and kitchen should also be high on the list – everything else can wait.

  • One job not many of us want to tackle when we first move in is the cleaning. Ironically though, the best time to do it is before you start unpacking, while the rooms are still empty of furniture. Think about arranging for a professional cleaning company to blitz the new, empty house while you’re still moving out of the old house – it could be money well spent.

  • Remember to collect up all the spare keys to your old house from friends, family and neighbours so that you can hand them over to the new owners.
  • Inform everyone who needs to know of your change of address. Top of the list is utilities providers, but there’s a whole list of other organisations including your bank, insurance company, doctor and vet.

Singer Christina Milian may not be dominating the pop charts any more. But she is definitely top of the bikini bods as she unveiled her curvy figure beachside in Hawaii.
The Dip It Low singer was dropped by her label last year, but is planning a return to the spotlight with a blonde makeover, and a sexy new look.
But Christina clearly couldn't wait for the career relaunch instead opting to reveal almost all during a mini-break with her rapper/producer boyfriend The Dream.
